Coastal Martial Arts

Martial Arts in Harmony

Coastal Martial Arts was founded in Calais, Maine in 1996 under the direction of Sensei Ruth Moore.  The focus of the school was to offer a quality Martial Arts program to area residents without regard to politics or limitations on promotions.  Coastal Martial Arts is a member of the  United States Martial Arts Association,  North American Taiho Jitsu Association, Northeast Martial Arts Federation.

Initially, classes were offered in Calais, Maine; but as the demand for this program increased, the school expanded and offers classes in other locations, and at the home dojo in Milbridge. In a cooperative arrangement with local recreation departments and school systems, the class fees are purposely kept to a few dollars per month to allow more people and families to enjoy practicing and learning the Martial Arts.  Additionally, Coastal Martial Arts has developed a unique children’s program, which has earned international recognition from health professionals, law enforcement agencies, martial artists, and the business communities.

Sensei Moore has experienced and trained in several styles of Martial Arts throughout the world, including Karate, Aikido, Tae Kwon Do, and JuJitsu.  She began her official training in the military and then trained locally in Machias for several years learning the basic principals of the Martial Arts.  Presently she continues her advanced training with her instructors: Master James Carey of Rumford, Maine and Master Ken Mariecki of Springfield, Massachusetts.  Both of her instructors collectively hold high ranks in Shorin Ryu Karate, JuJitsu, Judo, Taiho Jitsu, and Hung Gar Kung Fu.  Sensei Moore holds the rank of Yodan in Aiki Bujitso Do, Yodan in Sen-i Ryu Budo, Yodan in Taiho Jitsu, Sandan in Shorin Ryu Matsamura Seito Karate, Sandan in Okinawan Kobudo, the rank of Shodan  Kodokan Judo, and Shorin Ryu Kenshin Kan Karate, and a high student rank in Tsuki Shio Ryu JuJitsu.  She was recently inducted for the second time into the Martial Arts Masters, Pioneers, and Living Legends Hall of Fame, and has been recognized as 2001 Master Instructor of the Year and the 2000 Woman of the Year, respectively.
